Protecting Yourself: The Importance of Proper PPE Use

Agriculture involves tasks that expose workers to various hazards. Whether you’re handling chemicals, operating machinery or equipment, or working in extreme weather conditions, personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for keeping you safe on the job.  While PPE is considered the last line of defense against workplace hazards, it is most effective when combined with administrative controls such as training and safe work procedures. When hazards cannot be eliminated, engineered out, or substituted, using PPE alongside these measures helps create a safer work environment.

Common Types of PPE for Farming

Tips for Proper PPE Use

  • Choose the right PPE for the task at hand.
  • Always check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) of products you work with. The SDS will provide information and instructions on PPE use.
  • Always inspect your PPE before use to check for signs of damage or wear.
  • Always ensure you have the right size for a proper fit.
  • Maintain and clean regularly if your PPE is reusable, to ensure it functions properly.
  • Damaged or worn-out PPE should be replaced immediately.

A safer farm is a productive farm. Taking a few extra minutes to wear PPE properly can help prevent serious injuries. Your health is your most valuable asset—protect it.
