Lloyd Evans Memorial Safety Award

Lloyd Evans is remembered for many significant contributions to agriculture, with a legacy defined by leadership and unwavering dedication to farm safety. Throughout his life, Lloyd held a number of influential roles, including President of the Annapolis County Federation of Agriculture, the Nova Scotia Grain Commission, Horticulture Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA). However, some of his most notable contributions were related to advancing farm safety.

As a true safety champion, Lloyd was a driving force behind key initiatives that continue to safeguard farm families and workers across Nova Scotia today. He chaired the NSFA Safety Committee, served on the National Farm Safety organization for nine years, and was on the executive of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association. Not only that, but Lloyd was also instrumental in the establishment of Farm Safety Nova Scotia (FSNS) and the Farm Safety Handbook.

In recognition of Lloyd’s dedication to agriculture in general and farm safety in particular, the Lloyd Evans Memorial Award was created. This award is presented annually to an individual, farm, organization or agricultural business who has had a positive impact on the agriculture industry and who continuously strives to improve health and safety in Nova Scotia. It is intended to recognize safety leaders – just as Lloyd was.

Who Should Be Nominated?

To be considered for the award the person, business, farm or organization must:

  • Have made significant contributions to support the advancement of health and safety in the agriculture industry
  • Have increased safety awareness within the industry or on the farm
  • Have increased knowledge of health and safety within the industry or on the farm
  • Be considered a safety leader in the industry or on the farm
  • Promote a work environment that is respectful and supportive
  • For farm businesses: have no OHS compliance or stop work orders in the last 3 years.

All candidates must be nominated for the award, so if any of these qualities remind you of someone in your community, this is your chance to recognize their impact.

The Nomination Process

Nominations for the Lloyd Evans Memorial Award are open during October. Simply fill out the nomination form and provide background information about the nominee’s safety practices and initiatives. The winner will be announced at the NSFA Annual General Meeting Banquet on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro.

Please Note: Members of the Board of Farm Safety NS or the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture Council or staff are not eligible for nomination.

Continuing Lloyd’s Legacy

Since its inception in 2020, the Lloyd Evans Memorial Award has honoured a select group of individuals and farms who have left a lasting mark on farm safety in Nova Scotia. Past recipients include David Powers, Jos and Patrick VanOostrum, Angus Ells, and David Newcombe—each of whom has demonstrated outstanding leadership in agricultural safety.

Consider the dedicated safety champions that you know and nominate one of them for this award to recognize their contributions and to continue Lloyd Evan’s safety legacy.
